About Alexandra Beaumont

I am a fantasy author, quirky adventurer and swordfighter who's passionate about folklore, music, LARP and nature. My folklore fantasy series starts with the Ancient Cornish set Dissonance of Bird Song, which is a visceral and lyrical tale of sisterly bonds, ancient curses and nature magic. You can expect worlds of myth, magic and intrigue for fans of Lucy Holland's Sistersong.

Dissonance of Bird Song

In the storm-riven wilds of ancient Cornwall the sea's whisper will charm us all.

Dissonance of Bird Song is the young adult lyrical folkloric-fantasy tale of Eseld, a song-weaver fleeing her home to cure the sacred birds of her people and save her sister. Locked between the lies of land-dwellers and the snare of an ancient sea queen, Eseld must fight to find her own path. Amidst a storm of betrayal and heartbreak, what will Eseld sacrifice to save the ones she loves?

“Dissonance of Bird Song is a haunting and original mixture of Cornish-folk-fantasy. Eseld is a formidable heroine, a song-weaver turned warrior on a quest through an enchanted world where magic clings like myst. Beaumont's novel evokes the unique and beautiful setting of Cornwall, mingling these observations of the land and seascapes with praiseworthy worldbuilding.”
—Tracy Fahey, author of They Shut Me Up and New Music for Old Rituals

Readers who enjoy folk horror, Lucy Hounsom’s Sistersong, T Kingfisher, and Naomi Novik’s Uprooted will love Dissonance of Bird Song.

Ballad of River Bones

Ballad of River Bones is the conclusion of epic folklore fantasy and Indie Press Award Distinguished Favourite duology, Dissonance of Bird Song, ending the critically acclaimed tale of “love, loss and sacrifice.”

Cursed by ghosts of her victims and haunted by her past, Nessa searches for her lost sister. In the Myst, change is devastating. To survive, Nessa makes a pact with a mysterious druid to protect herself from the ghosts of those she has killed. As the shadows draw long over ancient Cornwall, Nessa’s path leads her to a choice:

Save her sister and doom herself to death,

or destroy the Myst and banish her sister to the sea.

Frequently Asked Questions

What themes can I expect?

Expect druids, witches and ancient powers writhing beneath the soil and sea in a way that blends epic fantasy and folk horror in a sublime mix of primal power and the will to survive.

Heavily inspired by ancient music and song magic, the series tugs the songs of old from their depths and gives them new life and power in these stories that would appeal to fans of Lucy Holland's Sistersong and David Gemmel's Rigante series.

My stories focus on diverse characters as well as themes such as overcoming chronic illness and mental health in intricately woven stories of family love, tension and sacrifice.

What age group are these books for?

The first two books in the Myst Cycle world are New Adult, but have a crossover appeal to Young Adult and Adult. Any new titles released in this world will be Adult Fantasy.

My other series (Testament of the Stars) is Adult Fantasy.

Where can I buy your books?

My books are all available through Waterstones, Bookshop.org, Amazon, Barnes & Noble and other online retailers. Books can also be ordered into stores, and I encourage you to support indie bookstores where possible (but be aware there is a longer lead in time on these purchases due to my publisher being US-based.)

You can also listen to the opening of Dissonance of Bird Song on the Alternative Stories and Fake Realities podcast.
